Code Name Verity

One of my favourite books of 2012, and of all time, is Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein. It's an amazing story of friendship and I highly recommend it. It's well loved by fellow YA bloggers, including my friend, Maggie. Magz just wrote a guest post about her love for the book and the author over at Chachic's blog.

Knowing our love for the book, I decided a custom polish would be an awesome thing to have and I got in touch with the lovely Jalene, the maker of Aussie indie brand Pretty Pots Polish. She was more than happy to make a polish to match the cover of Code Name Verity. The polish she made has a grey crelly base with matte red, white and gun metal grey holo glitters and black specks.

I've been meaning to do a book mani to match CNV and wanted to incorporate this custom polish, so I used two coats of Pretty Pots Polish Code Name Verity on my thumb, index, and pinky nails.

On my middle and rings nails I used 2 coats of Zoya Dove and then lightly sponged on Zoya Kelly and China Glaze White Out.

For the word Verity, the red ring, the plane, and the rose I used a very fine brush and acrylic paint.

I love how well Jalene's creation matches the cover, it's perfect.

If you do end up reading Code Name Verity, be sure to check out Elizabeth's second novel, Rose Under Fire, too!

Mish Mash Challenge: three colours

First off, Happy Christmas/holidays to everyone :)

I was going to go with a book manicure for the Mish Mash Challenge theme of three colours as I thought the cover was white, blue, and black but then I realised the cover was pale blue, not white. So, I decided to do my final Christmas-themed manicure and went with pastel jumper nails inspired by two nail IGers: thenailomon and coewless. I used pink, purple, and blue and didn't count white as a colour ;)

On my thumb, index, and pink nails I used 2 coats of Glam Polish Cloud Atlas over one coat of China Glaze White Out. I don't think the base coat of white was needed though, Cloud Atlas had great coverage and is just so, so pretty.

On my minddle and ring nails I used two coats of China Glaze White Out and then I used acrylic paint and a v.fine brush to do the detailing. You can find a great tutorial by Coewless on how to paint the snowflake here.

Have a wonderful rest of the week :)

Mish Mash Challenge: nature

Evening, all! This week the theme of the Mish Mash Challenge is nature. There seemed to be endless possibilities but I wanted to do something holiday-themed and I was inspired by this gorgeous manicure by Bad Girl Nails - isn't it stunning?

This week I received my first order from Pretty Pots Polish, an Aussie indie brand, and I wanted to try one out. I used 2 coats of Pretty Pots Polish Christmas Treats over 2 coats of China Glaze White Out. I also used CG White Out as the base for my nail art.

For the poinsettias I used acrylic paint and a fine brush.

I added some gold caviar beads to the centre of each flower after dotting on some top coat.

Mish Mash Challenge: stamping

This week the theme of the Mish Mash Challenge is nail stamping. I used to love nail stamping but it's not something I do often these days. I started doing more freehand work plus my stamper stopped picking up designs and it became too frustrating.

But, things worked out a little better today!

I started out with 2 coats of Pretty Serious Bloody Bride, a gorgeous burgundy jelly with purple and gold glitter. Then I used Ulta3 Gold Rush Fever and Bundle Monster plate 404 over the top.

This was hard to capture, once the light hit the gold polish, it no longer showed up very well but Ulta3 Gold Rush Fever worked really well as a stamping polish!

Mish Mash Challenge: Around the World

This week the theme of the Mish Mash Challenge is: around the world. I immediately thought of nails I did earlier in the year, I shared them on IG but not on the blog so I thought I'd use them for this week.

I did nails for Bastille Day in July. On each nail I used 2 coats of Ulta3 Lily White. Once dry, I taped off the middle of my thumb and index nails and painted the left side of each nail with Ulta3 Blue Marlin and the right side with Ulta3 Sizzling Red.

On my middle nail I drew a bonnet rouge and on my ring nail I drew the Eiffel Tower using permanent markers. On my pinky I painted on some top coat and then added blue, white, and red glitter to match the flag.

I really enjoyed doing this manicure and loved the finished look. I can't wait to see what the rest of the gang did for the theme this week!

Walking on Trampolines

Happy Friday, folks! Today I have a book manicure that matches one of my favourite covers. I adore most floral patterns so Walking on Trampolines by Frances Whiting caught my eye right away.

I started with 2 coats of L.A Colors Color Craze Sea Foam then I sponged on Ulta3 Lily White over the top for the clouds.

I painted the flowers and leaves using a fine brush and acrylic paint.

I really enjoyed capturing this book, it was a challenge but well worth the time, and the book itself is a fantastic read.

Have a great weekend :)

Mish Mash Challenge: card or board game

This week the theme of Kimber's Mish Mash Challenge is card or board game. My first thought was immediately a card game we played as children, jeu des sept familles (the seven families game). It's a French card game and we used to have a few sets but I didn't want to go searching through storage for them so I found a few versions online and went with one of those instead.

On my thumb and ring nails I used 2 coats of Australis Acid Rain. On my index nail I used 2 coats of WnW I Need a Refresh-Mint, on my middle nail I used 3 coats of Picture Polish Nude, and on my pinky I used 2 coats of China Glaze Happy Go Lucky.

The rest of the design was done using a fine paint brush and acrylic paint

I really enjoyed the theme this week, it was fun thinking back to playing this game and I'm really looking forward to seeing what games the rest of the MMC gang chose!

How to Say Goodbye in Robot

Hi all! Things have been a bit quiet on the blog but today I have another bookish manicure to share. The book is How to Say Goodbye in Robot by Natalie Standiford. I had to read the book this month and I knew the cover was one I wanted to recreate.

I started with 2 coats of WnW Tropicalia - when I was picking colours this looked like a perfect match but when photographed it looked a lot more coral than pink.

I painted the phone using a fine brush and acrylic paint.

I was going to add a bit more detail but the cover is so simple so I decided to leave my nails the same way.

Mish Mash Challenge: faux stone

This week the theme of the Mish Mash Challenge is faux stone. I was going to attempt a water spotted manicure but it looked like just as much work as a water marble, so I went with an easier option!

I used rhodonite for my inspiration and started with 2 coats of Mode Cosmetics Fresh Melon.

I followed up by sponging on Zoya Dove and over that I sponged Butter London Bossy Boots. Finally I sponged on Ulta3 Black Satin.

And here's a shot with the rhodonite crystal I have

Have a great week, everyone :)

Mint triangle nails

The wonderfully talented Pshiit is celebrating reaching 100,000 followers on IG by having a contest inspired by the shade mint green.

One of my favourite Pshiiit manicures is this one - yellow nails with triangular half moons. I have wanted to try it for ages and today I decided to give it a go using mint as the base instead of yellow.

I started with 3 coats of Barry M Mint Green.

The rest of the design was done with acrylic paint and a fine nail art brush. The tutorial is really easy to follow and while this took a while, I did it while watching Pitch Perfect so it didn't feel like very long at all.

Happy PshiiitenfĂȘte everyone!

Mish Mash Challenge: holographic

This week the theme of Kimber's Mish Mash Challenge is: holographic. I went with something simple as I'm feeling a tad uninspired!

On my thumb, index, and pinky nails I used 2 coats of A England St George. On my middle and ring nails I used 2 coats of Color Club Cherubic.

Once dry I stamped using Bundle Monster BM412 and A England St George. Then I used my smallest dotting tool to go over the dots as my stamper has been difficult lately and doesn't pick up designs very well.

Here's a shot in sunlight

And here's Color Club Cherubic on my other hand

The Trap Door

Happy weekend, folks! We don't really celebrate Halloween here in Aus, but I wanted to do some spooky nails for a competition. The first thing that came to mind was an old tv show called The Trap Door. It's from England and was created in the 80s, I remember it being on tv a lot when I was little.

Here's a clip for anyone who hasn't heard of it!

On my thumb, middle, and pinky nails I used Ulta3 Black Satin. On my index and ring nails I used Ulta3 Scarlet

Boni, the skull, was done with white, grey, and black acrylic paint. Berk, the blue guy, was done with blue and black acrylic paint, plus Barry M Matt White and Ulta3 Black Satan for his eyes.

Drutt, the spider, was done with grey and black acrylic paint, and his eyes were done with Barry M Matt White and Ulta3 Black Satin. I did the eyes on my thumb and pinky nails with yellow acrylic paint and Ulta3 Black Satin. I did the trap door on my thumb with brown acrylic paint.

These were a lot of fun to do and thanks to watching episodes of it I have the theme song stuck in my head :)

Mish Mash Challenge: pink - Withering Tights

This week the theme of Kimber's Mish Mash Challenge is pink! I was feeling a little uninspired and all I could think of to go with pink were hearts or pigs. Anyway, I spotted a book on my shelf and decided to use that for pink week.

The book is Withering Tights by Louise Rennison. I adore her Georgia Nicolson series and can't wait to start this series because her books are hilarious.

On my thumb, index, and ring nails I started with 2 coats of Barry M Matt White. Once dry I taped off my thumb and index nails and painted the gaps with Mode Cosmetics Fresh Melon.

On my middle and pinky nails I used WnW Lavender Creme. I used a dotting tool and Ulta3 Black Satin to add the dotted outline.

On my ring nail I used a fine paint brush and black acrylic paint to paint the legs and cloud. I filled in the stripes using WnW Lavender Creme.

I'm happy I went with this book, the cover was a lot of fun to replicate and it reminded me that I want to start this book soon!

Finding Freia Lockhart

Last week I read two fantastic books, Finding Freia Lockhart and Freia Lockhart's Summer of Awful by Aimee Said. These books were so funny, realistic, and wonderful. I was inspired by the first book to do a bookish manicure to match.

On my thumb and index nails I started with a coat of Nubar Barricade. Then I sponged on China Glaze Elephant Walk followed by Priti NYC Lambs Ears. Once dry I used a fine brush and acrylic paint to paint the bricks.

On my middle and index nails I started with Barry M Dragonfruit. I used a dotting tool and Nubar Barricade to add the eyelets. I used white acrylic paint to add the toe of the sneakers, the shoelaces, and the dots.

On my pinky I used L.A Girl Brites Kryptonite and Ulta3 Fruit Loop.

I knew from the start that while these elements all looked good on the cover, they might not work out in manicure form, but I really wanted to include all three ideas.

Polish on Parade (15)

Polish on Parade is my weekly polish haul

A couple of weeks ago I saw an online sale for Priti NYC polish and since it was a brand I'd been waiting to try, I snapped up 5 bottles. I must have been in the mood for green because these are the ones I chose:

Priti NYC Envy
Priti NYC Love Patt
Priti NYC Lambs Ears
Priti NYC Baby's Tears
Priti NYC Pearlwort
